However, the Lord tells Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. Jesse replies, "There is still the youngest, but he is tending the sheep." (1 Samuel 16:11). Samuel, at first, seems hesitant. Why would God choose the youngest, the least likely candidate? But the Lord insists, "Go and bring him. He is the one." (1 Samuel 16:12). And so, Samuel is led to the fields, where he finds David, a young shepherd boy, tending his sheep.
The text then reveals a crucial detail: "Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers." (1 Samuel 16:13). This act of anointing symbolized David�s selection by God, not as a mere shepherd, but as the future king of Israel. The fact that David was chosen while tending his sheep is significant. It signifies that God can call anyone, from any walk of life, to serve His purpose. David's humility and faithfulness in his everyday duties paved the way for his extraordinary calling.
David's story teaches us that we should never underestimate the power of humility.
