Nehemiah, a Jewish cupbearer to the Persian King Artaxerxes, lived a life filled with privilege and comfort. But his heart yearned for something more. He longed for the well-being of his people, the people of Jerusalem, who were scattered and struggling. One day, news reached him of the dire state of his homeland. His cousin Hanani arrived, bringing with him a chilling report of the destruction of Jerusalem's walls, leaving the city vulnerable to invaders.
It was at this pivotal moment, amidst the weight of such news, that Nehemiah turned to the power of prayer. He didn't simply lament the situation; he poured out his heart to God, acknowledging his own shortcomings and seeking guidance. "And I said, �Oh Lord, God of heaven, the great and awesome God, you who keep your covenant of love with those who love you and obey your commands�" (Nehemiah 1:5).
Nehemiah�s Prayer: A Model for Our Own

Confessing his own sins: "I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father�s family, have committed against you. We have acted very wickedly, failing to obey the commands, decrees, and laws you gave through your servant Moses." (Nehemiah 1:6�7)
Expressing his deep concern: "Remember the word you gave to your servant Moses, saying, �If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations" (Nehemiah 1:8).
Appealing to God's promises: "But if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your people are scattered to the ends of the earth, I will gather them back and bring them to the place I have chosen for my name to be honored." (Nehemiah 1:9)
Seeking God�s guidance: "Lord, I beg you to listen to my prayer. Give me favor in the sight of the king so that he will grant me permission to go to Judah and rebuild the walls of Jerusalem." (Nehemiah 1:11)

"I pray to the God of heaven, and I will tell the king what you have said. If it pleases the king, and if the Lord my God is with me, I will go up and rebuild." (Nehemiah 1:12)
